The Crime Prevention Education Program
This program has been developed in partnership with the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS) and forms part of the Government's vision for safer communities. It is aimed at 'middle learners' in years 6 and 7 and involves teachers and police working together to prevent and reduce crime among young people. The program is designed to be incorporated within the society and environment learning areas of the curriculum. It consists of eight modules related to crime prevention: | Acceptable community behaviours | Helps students make informed judgements about the way they behave in public to avoid offending others | | Crime prevention strategies | Emphasises that young people can contribute positively and significantly to safer communities | | Public space | Helps students to acquire skills to enable them to co-exist with other users of public space and public transport | | Crime reporting strategies | Focuses on reporting a crime and ways to prevent becoming a potential victim | | Harassment, assault and bullying | Examines students' responses to aggression and their justification for using violence as a means to solve their problems; discusses other options available to resolve differences | | Stealing and shoplifting | Gets young people to see shoplifting and stealing as serious crimes with significant consequences | | Property damage | Shows the affects of vandalism and arson, including financial and the way people feel about their homes and their neighbourhood | | Graffiti | Although graffiti is a form of property damage, this is included as a separate module to emphasise the high cost of its removal to the community. |
