The Major Crime Investigation Branch comprises of three sections:
The Major Crime Investigation Section (MCIS), provides a specialist criminal investigation service to the South Australia Police and the South Australian community.
The MCIS also has primary responsibility for the State response to the investigation of terrorist incidents in South Australia. The MCIS also manages the investigation of 'death in police custody' investigations.
The Section's core business includes the investigation and management of declared Major Crimes referred from the State Tasking Co-ordination Group. Declared Major Crime includes:-
- Murder;
- Kidnapping;
- Product Contamination and Extortion; and
- Other crimes that are of grave concern to the community.
The Missing Persons Investigation Section oversees and ensures a thorough and complete investigation is carried out by SAPOL members into reports of missing persons, with the ultimate objective of locating the missing person as expediently as possible in order to minimize trauma to the person and family. The Section also regularly reviews long term missing person cases to identify any suspicious circumstances and refers them to the appropriate investigation area.
The Coronial Investigation Section also provides a specialist investigative service to assist the State Coroner relating to hospital and mental health service deaths and minor criminal breaches of the Coroners Act and Births, Deaths and Marriages Act..
